Speaking with the words of Prof. Reinhard Werner,
"...I recently have become interested in quantum information...". "Recently" already started in the beginning of the
year 2001, where I searched for an interesting project regarding my diploma thesis. During that
time I was interested in doing a project in the physical chemistry department in the group of Prof. Wiebren Veeman.
I already knew his name in connection with some NMR publications about quadrupolar spins
which I used in Canada during my year as an exchange student.
Accidentally, Prof. David Cory
visited my later supervisor during that time. Prof. Veeman had
the idea to start a project in direction "NMR Quantum Information Processing (NMR QIP)".
This was certainly motivated by the brilliant work of his former Post-doc David Cory, who is one of the founders of NMR QIP.
I remember that it was in-between my oral exams; I was sitting with Prof. Cory in a coffee room and discussing what kind of
project would be suited for a diploma thesis. I did of course not have any clue about any of his ideas.
But my interest was roused and NMR QIP turned out to be the topic of my diploma thesis and dissertation.
